I pickled up a pair of Advent speakers, my version is known as the NLA (New Large Advent) Bullnose (the curved wood on the front of the speaker) set up yesterday and am very happy with them. I think they will serve me well for some time to come. The guy I got them from purchased then from HiFi Haus in Madison where they were restored with new caps in the crossovers, woofers refoamed and whatever the “fried egg” tweeters needed. I haven’t met Russ at HiFi Haus yet but he gets excellent reviews so I am confident that these speakers will serve me for years to come. No more shiny objects, please!
Why buy them at all? Well, they were a great deal for, essentially, new speakers even though these were originally made about 45-plus years ago, the New Large Advent version of these speakers were produced from approximately 1977 to 1982, they are still considered some of the best speakers out there. The modern speakers I have, ELAC Debut 2.0 b5.2s with an REL Zero sub were great but the difference is pretty pronounced. While they may have a narrower sound stage than the ELAC setup the fullness and clarity are no comparison. The Advents are clearly superior. I also really dig the look of the speaker. I’m a happy camper right now.
